I’ve been looking around a bit for patterns that I believe would be easier, if not easy, for beginners. Being a beginner at stitching is a delicate thing: you want to make something that won’t frustrate you beyond the bounds of human tolerance, however at the exact same time, you want to make something that you really want to wear. As I said, delicate.

This is one of those patterns that I believe would be great for a beginner (it’s up best now at miss Helene’s.) It’s fascinating without being complicated.

Here are a few of my requirements for an “easy” pattern:

— no set-in sleeves— easy darts (and not as well numerous of ’em)— full skirt (to obviate hip/butt fitting issues; also, full skirts are much more fun as well as harder to purchase in stores)— pockets (duh)

If I were a beginning sewist making this for the very first time, I’d do it in a huge wild floral; that would make it easier to hide any type of bobbles in that front skirt seam. (A extremely textured fabric, like piqué, may work for that, too.) If I were feeling brave, I’d do a contrasting/coordinating yoke as well as pockets, as seen here. perhaps I’d do the yoke in black or white, if I were worried about the possibility of a bright unflattering color near my deal with (which, obviously, I never am, however I hear tell some people are).

Now the only thing that makes this pattern NOT perfect for novices is that it’s an unprinted pattern — your only guidance to what piece is what would be teeny perforations on the pattern tissue. If I were starting out with this, if possible, I’d either discover somebody who has sewed A great deal to assist me pin the pattern as well as cut it out, or I’d spend a great solid two hours inspecting as well as double-checking my design to make sure I had it right. two hours spent at the beginning frequently saves triple that at the end. (And avoids the job from being a “wadder” — something you wad up as well as throw in the trash!)
